The Gluttony vs. Satchel of Gravel, Part One

April 3rd, 2008 · 8 Comments

Who is behind Satchel of Gravel? The Gluttony got a chance to chop it with one of the people behind the Gravel…

The Gluttony: What’s your name? What do you do?

Satchel: Most people know me as Shahendra, but for the purposes of the
Internets, I go by Satchel. I’m one of the writers of Satchel of Gravel.

TG: What’s the whole idea behind Satchel of Gravel?

S: Satchel of Gravel is a satirical look at the current state of youth
culture, a subject that the staff here is pretty well versed in,
considering their varied backgrounds in fashion, music, retail, etc.
Essentially, we’re just saying what everyone else is thinking about the
rapid decline that one of the most creative cultures on the modern era is
going through, whether it be music, fashion etc.

TG: Where’d the name Satchel of Gravel come from?

S: Contrary to popular belief, it’s not a swipe at Digital Gravel. The
name is actually a reference to the former Editor-In-Chief of The Source
Dasun Allah, who went to jail for swinging a (wait for it) satchel of
gravel in Harlem at people in 2006. Originally, Satchel of Gravel was
going to be a music blog that just had postings of music, kind of like
Eskay does with NahRight.com, but not nearly as awesome.

TG: What was Don’t Believe the Hypebeast?

S: Don’t Believe the Hypebeast was a joke that Johnny Tens, Air Face and I
came up with. Around the time when the streetwear Internet scene was at
its peak, we would see kids going nuts outside UNDFTD every time a
hyped-up shoe dropped. It always made us think of the Public Enemy song,
Don’t Believe the Hype and given that they were going nuts over sneakers
or streetwear, we figured that Don’t Believe the Hypebeast was a good name
for the site. When we started DBTHb, it that got big too fast for any of
us to keep up with, because we had no idea how to use Wordpress. If anyone
remembers the way the DBTHb was written and formatted, they can attest to
our blogging retarded-ness.

TG So why did you fold it? It was really popular in the scene.

S: It was a limited edition website. Plus we never got any swag, which is
why most people start blogs. So despite our best efforts, it didn’t seem
worth it.
