Eat W/ Reez: The Oaks Gourmet Market

Friday August 13, 2010

The Oaks Gourmet Market was established in 2009. It is a simple, but ambitious plan. Serve high-quality, delicious food and beverages at a fair price. Sounds easy enough.

The first time I went here, it was on accident. “The Oaks Gourmet Market* is located in the place of an old liquor store that I used to go to from time to time. It is also next to one of my favorite sushi joints Taiyo. When I went in the first time, they told be about this great burger. At the time I was full, believe it or not. I said I would be back, and I was not lying.
The Dry Age Burger Half Pound of our Dry Age Blend with Taleggio cheese, Black Forest bacon, red onion, tomato, Arugula & our smoked jalapeño-pineapple compote on toasted_Brioche

This was a great burger. The produce was extremely fresh and crunchy. I liked that. It added an interesting texture to the burger. The smoked jalapeño-pineapple compote was so delicious combined with the Black Forest bacon. I don’t think I had ever had Black Forest bacon before.

There is nice outside seating if you choose to sit outside. I sat at the picnic table inside with some other patrons. I loved the burger there and would recommend trying it out. It’s a steal at $11.50

Eat W/ Reez: Homemade Mac n Cheese

Tuesday August 10, 2010

I love my friends. One of my long time co-workers brought me some of his wife’s mac n cheese last night. I felt very special. It was delicious.

She put the directions right on the tinfoil Dummy proof.

The recipe was past down from generation to generation. I was not privied to that information. I respect that.

Thank you!!!

Eat W/ Reez: Kings Road Cafe

Tuesday August 10, 2010

I love coffee. If you love coffee too, then by default, you will love Kings Road Cafe because their coffee is the shiznittle snap snip snap. Using only premium Arabica beans from select plantations in the world’s finest growing regions, the coffee is considered an heirloom recipe. (I grabbed that off their website.) Kings Road Cafe was established in 1990.

This was my first visit to Kings Road Cafe. I had heard rumblings about this magical cup of joe. They weren’t lying, jack. You can tell just from the look that it is going to be amazing.

Cream? YES!

Sugar? Would not be the same without it!

Ok, let’s get to the food. I got the Kings Road Eggs Benedict on a fresh-baked croissant. It was very yummy. The croissant was doughy and flakey. Simply amazing. They had great potatoes as well.

I sharpened up the Benedict with some parmesan.

I got a pancake on the side. Very fluffy and the butter was melted. Happy camper here.

I loved Kings Road Cafe coffee. Might be one of the best cups in LA. I would compare it to the coffee at Figaro Bistro on N. Vermont. You need to try both of these establishments if you have not been before.

I am going to give them a rating of LUST 6 out of 7 stars because of the coffee.

Eat W/ Reez: Baskin Robbins AKA 31 Flavors

Monday August 9, 2010

Sometimes you just need that cream. Ice Cream!

No better place than good ol’ Baskin Robbins. I tried a few samples out before I made my choice.
Cookies and Cream

Chocolate Chip

In the end, I got a waffle cone with two scoops of Cookies and Cream and one scoop of Gold Medal Ribbon.
It deserves a second pic.

Eat W/ Reez: The Sugar Shacks

Monday August 9, 2010

I love a solid breakfast. The Sugar Shack is where you go in Huntington Beach when you want to satify the AM hunger pains. Be prepared for a wait though. The Sugar Shack is always busy and is known to the locals as the best place for breakfast.

After waiting for about 25 minutes, I realized that the counter had open seating. Luckily, there were two seats next to each other for me and my friend. I was thrilled that I no longer had to wait.

I started the meal with a nice cup of joe. I tried to order the biscuit, but those are only available on weekends. I will be going back for those.

Instead, I got an omelet and a side of hash browns. I built a custom omelet with cheddar cheese, avocado, mushrooms, and bacon. Food was solid. I would go back over and over again.

I love English muffins.

Every person needs a breakfast place like Sugar Shack with great food that is consistent. Reliability is crucial for a restaurant.

Eat W/ Reez: Chef Burger

Friday July 30, 2010

Back in the days when I was young I’m not a kid anymore
But some days I sit and wish I was a kid again

That song lyric sums up my feelings about Chef Burger on the corner of Thousand Oaks BLVD and Los Feliz dr. I grew up less than a half a mile away from here. I can remember going here all the time to get chocolate milkshakes, chicken fingers, and burgers. This was in the mid 90’s. Back when a crispy $20 bill would last the weekend. I would get up in the morning, grab my bike and hit the streets. I have a messed up story about a bike and Chef Burger that I will tell later.

Chef Burger is a great place to get an affordable burger, fries and a milkshake. The fries are thick, kinda soggy, but not limp, warm and soft on the inside. They are thicker than McDonald’s fries but not as thick as a steak fries. The burger patty is thin, I suggest getting a double. The ingredients are not special they are just good. I can attest that good ol’ Chef Burger is consistent. You know what you’re getting when you go to Chef Burger, an affordable classic burger with all the right fixin’s. I mix and match my fixins each time, this time I added cheddar cheese, bacon and guacamole. This burger is not going to win any awards but it is well worth the $5. One way to know you are getting a good short order burger to go is measuring the amount of grease on the bag. If the bag has grease spots that is usually a good sign. Look at those grease spots starting to form. Remember that story I wanted to tell you about? Well here it is. I was about 11 years old, I was sitting here: I was looking out the window (below) watching my brand new, or close to new, GT Performer. If you know anything about the old GT BMX bikes, than you know that bike was the doodie. Behind my bike in the parking lot were two scumb-bags. At the time I did not know it. They stared at my friends and I while we ate. We were with my friend Danielle, she was cute so assumed they were staring at her. Unfortunately I was very wrong. A few minutes later I look up to see one of the guys gone and the other guy, piece of earth waste, hoping on my bike and ridding away. Yup, I got bike jacked. Pretty whack huh? I ran outside to see him pedal away to his friend across the street, they put the bike in the car and took off. I cried in front of Chef Burger that day. I never got my bike back. Pretty shitty if you ask me but I learned an important life lesson. LOCK YOUR BIKE UP. I never made that mistake again. I am sure those guys aren’t doing much with their lives. Who jacks an 11 year old kid. they do obviously. So that is my story.

Back to present day Chef Burger. If you are in Thousand Oaks go get a a greasy 5$ burger and a milk shake. Just remember to lock your bike up.
